The Scene at The Terrace Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne
A slice of paradise within the bustling Melbourne CBD, The Terrace takes full advantage of the surrounding lush gardens for weddings and special events.
The Royal Botanic Gardens are high on the Melbourne tourism must-see list for a reason; the expansive gardens are meticulously maintained, featuring exceptional native and international fauna and flora.
The Terrace is a reception-only venue, so great attention to detail is paid to every element of the event. The interior is open and airy, with an abundance of natural light streaming in through the floor-to-ceiling windows.
Combining elegance and tradition, The Terrace caters for both seated and cocktail-style receptions with its flexible and purpose-built event spaces.
The serenity of the gardens sets a wonderful tone for an afternoon or evening wedding.
The Terrace Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne Wedding Ceremonies
The Terrace is a reception-only venue and has teamed up with catering and event management team Blakes Feast which organises ceremonies on the Taxodium Lawn. In cases of inclement weather, The Terrace can make arrangements for a ceremony space inside.
Alternatively, there are several churches nearby, and the Victoria Marriage Registry is a few minutes away in South Yarra. Say your vows in front of your loved ones before nipping away for some photographs.
With the gardens and the city your backdrop, your wedding photographer will be spoiled for choice.
The Terrace Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne Wedding Receptions
After the formal wedding party photos are finished, it’s time for your reception. Entering through Gate A, The Terrace is 100m from the edge of the gardens.
The Royal Botanic Gardens are pedestrian-access only, which is something to keep in mind in terms of accessibility for guests and any external vendors.
The Terrace itself is designed in a modern and contemporary style — the perfect option for couples who want to make the space their own. Described as a blank canvas, the arrangement and decor are totally up for negotiation. Tables, chairs, cutlery, and crockery are included in the hire.
Floor-to-ceiling windows harness natural light to illuminate the room with soft, warm sunshine. Through the glass doors and out onto the terrace, guests can mingle, enjoy canapés and drinks, and enjoy the evening air.
The terrace overlooks the calm Ornamental Lake, which during the warmer months is home to some of the RBG’s cutest residents; ducklings, cygnets, and plenty of other baby wildlife. When day turns to night, the terrace comes to life with magical string lighting.
The executive chef provides inhouse catering, but external caterers can be brought in pending approval from The Terrace’s Wedding Specialist. The inhouse catering team can easily cater for cultural cuisines, and a menu tasting is offered at no additional cost. BYO is permitted, and bartending service is provided by the venue.

The venue was beautiful and the food was amazing. The communication was really great. We were able to go in and set things up a few days before the wedding which we found really helpful. There were lots of different options on how we could set up the room which was great.
